Our zinc air hearing aid batteries, the most common type of hearing aid battery, are air-activated. Each battery has a factory-sealed sticker that keeps it inactive until the sticker (tab) is removed.
Once the sticker is removed, the oxygen in the air interacts with the zinc to turn the battery on. To get the best performance from your hearing aid battery, we recommend waiting about 2 minutes after removing the sticker to place the battery in the hearing aid. That one minute is enough time for it to properly activate.
Placing the sticker back on the battery will not make the battery inactive. Once it’s removed, the battery remains active until its power is eventually drained.
Zinc-air batteries remain stable for up to three years if you store them at room temperature in an arid environment. Don’t store them in a refrigerator. There just aren’t any benefits to doing that and, worse, condensation could build up between the sticker and the battery causing its power to be drained ahead of schedule.
Mercury-free
Mercury is no longer used in hearing aids. Although it assists with conductivity and the stabilization of internal components, mercury is toxic and can have harmful effects on your nervous, digestive, and immune systems. Mercury-free hearing aids are also environmentally friendly.
Life Expectancy
Our batteries have a shelf life of 2 years. However, once activated, the life expectancy for hearing aid batteries varies mainly due to these 4 factors:
- Level of hearing loss
- Amount of time that hearing aids are worn
- Environmental conditions
- Battery age
Conserve Battery Life
Hearing aid batteries never become inactive unless their power has been drained. However, you can get more life out of your batteries by opening the doors of your hearing aid, preferably at night when you lay down to sleep.
The average lifespan of the top 4 hearing aid batteries is:
- Size 10 (yellow): 3-7 days
- Size 312 (brown): 3-10 days
- Size 13 (orange): 6-14 days
- Size 675 (blue): 9-20 days
Battery Colors
Each hearing aid battery size is manufactured with a distinct color. So, when you order batteries from us, you only need to look for the color and you’ll know your size.
Battery Storage
Store hearing aid batteries at room temperature (10-25°C or 50-77°F). Heat, humidity, and refrigeration can shorten battery life. Also, keep batteries away from your keys or coins (metal objects) since one touching the other can cause a short-circuit.
Troubleshooting Problems with Your Hearing Aid Battery
If your hearing aid seems to not be functioning properly:
- The hearing aid battery may not have been active for the 2 minutes required after peeling off the sticker (tab)
- Check for a dented battery which can prevent good contact with the hearing aid)
- Check for dirt and grime build up which can also cause poor contact with the hearing aid
- Ensure that the battery securely fits into the battery door of the hearing aid
- Battery can be dead
